SLOW FADE

A VISUAL RECORD OF LAKE TAHOE'S LITTER DEGRADATION

Slow Fade is a collaboration between the Museum of Tahoe and the nonprofit Clean Up The Lake. Between 2018 and 2026, Clean Up The Lake has removed more than 78,000 pounds of litter from Lake Tahoe and other waterways, including over 130 underwater miles of cleanup.

Featuring photographs of litter recovered from Lake Tahoe, the exhibition brings together hundreds of objects—from sunglasses and cell phones to dog toys, drones, cans, and Fourth of July debris—offering only a glimpse of the tens of thousands of pounds of litter that have been removed from the lake.

Together, these images reveal both what ends up in the lake and what happens when it isn't removed. Over time, discarded items slowly break down into microplastics and other pollutants that can persist for generations.
